Receipt
A receipt is the payee’s written confirmation that a particular payment has arrived; the debtor may demand one with every payment.
Definition
For the payer it is the proof of performance — which is why it means something different in cash business than in payment traffic, where the bank document serves the same purpose. At the till, the sales slip is the usual form.
It differs from an invoice in direction: the invoice demands, the receipt confirms. Both in one document — «invoice/receipt» — is customary and permitted for cash payment, provided it remains recognisable that payment was made.
The wording
A debtor who makes a payment is entitled to demand a receipt and, where the debt is fully discharged, the return or cancellation of the debt instrument.
Where to read it
What the software must be able to do
In till operation what counts is whether the software presents the slip in full and files it unalterably; in invoicing, whether it can produce a payment confirmation without altering the invoice.
